Получил бакалаврскую степень в Concordia Senior College, магистерскую степень - в университете Вашингтона.

Защитил докторскую диссертацию (PhD) в Университете Лондона.

Является пастором Евангелическо-лютеранской церкви Германии.

Преподает в Дюкском университете с 1979 г.

Является одним из ведущих специалистов в области протестантской гомилетики.
