Родился 15 июня 1957 г.
В 1977 г. стал бакалавром философии в Университете Эдинбурга, в 1980 г. стал бакалавром богословия в Университете Абердина.
В 1987 г. защитил докторскую диссертацию (PhD) в Абердинском университете. Тема диссертации: “Theology, Ontology and the Philosophy of Art, with Special Reference to Paul Tillich and the Dutch Neo-Calvinists”.
Имеет также музыкальное образование - закончил Королевский колледж мызыки по специальности исполнительн и преподаватель фортепиано.
Преподавал в Кэмбриджском университете и университете St Andrews.
С 2000 г. преподает в Дюкском университете. С 2003 г. - профессор.
В 1983 г. был рукоположен в священника Церкви Англии.
