Профессор Дюкского университета. Специалист в области изучения социологии религии.

В 1982 г. получил бакалаврскую степень в Dartmouth College. Имеет две магистерские степени (по богословию и по социологии), полученные в Гарвардском университете.

В 1991 г. защитил в Гарварде докторскую (PhD) диссертацию по социологии.

Преподавал в Loyola University (Чикаго), Университете Нотр Дам, Университете Аризоны.

С 2007 г. является профессором социологии, религиоведения и богословия Дюкского университета.
