Краткая биографическая справка:
Иезуит, архимандрит восточного обряда, заслуженный профессор Папского Восточного института, один из крупнейших современных специалистов в области восточной литургики.

Родился в Провиденсе (США). В возрасте 17 лет вступил в Общество Иисуса (Орден иезуитов). Более 20 лет отдал учебе и исполнению различных послушаний, прежде всего, в области преподавания. Преподавал во многих странах, от Ирака в 1950-е гг. до Болгарии уже в пост-коммунистические времена. С 1970 года главное место работы о. Тафта - Папский Восточный институт в Риме, где он долгое время занимал должность проректора (Vice Rector) и профессора восточной литургики, а также являлся главным редактором издаваемой институтом серии монографий и сборников статей Orientalia Christiana Analecta. Первой специальностью о. Тафта был русский язык и славянский богослужебный обряд. В 1960-е гг. под влиянием о. Хуана Матеоса он обратился к изучению языков и богослужения других христианских традиций.

Профессор Роберт Тафт является автором более 800 научных работ и публикаций в области восточной литургики, в том числе многотомного исследования «История литургии св. Иоанна Златоуста», продолжающего труд Хуана Матеоса по истории византийской литургии Слова.

Как было отмечено в послесловии к русскому переводу монографии о. Тафта «Византийский церковный обряд» (СПб.: «Алетейя», 2000), сегодня «едва ли найдется какая-то область в истории византийского богослужения, научные представления о которой не были бы в той или иной степени сформированы исследованиями о. Роберта Тафта; едва ли среди молодых или среднего поколения ученых-литургистов найдется сейчас хоть один, кто не был бы, в той или иной степени, прямо или косвенно, его учеником».

В 1960-е гг. профессор Папского Восточного института в Риме Хуан Матеос задумал создать исчерпывающее исследование по истории литургии свт. Иоанна Златоуста, в котором были бы подведены итоги всей византийской литургиологии. В 1971 г. он опубликовал первый том, посвященный литургии оглашенных и заповедал продолжить труд своему ученику и преемнику Роберту Френсису Тафту.

Книга состоит из двух небольших, но очень важных работ современных католических литургистов: Роберта Тафта и его учителя Хуана Матеоса. Авторы — выдающиеся западные ученые, существенно повлиявшие на развитие литургической науки, известные во всем мире своими фундаментальными исследованиями в области истории богослужения на христианском Востоке.
