Профессор Нового Завета и член колледжа "Pembroke" Окфордского университета.

В 1979-1991 гг. являлся лектором по Новому Завету в Университете Манчестера.

В 1991-1996 гг. являлся профессором библейского критицизма в том же университете.

В 1996 г. переехал в Оксфорд, где стал лектором по Новому Завету в местном Университете.

В 2001 г. был назначен профессором Нового Завета.
