Проходил обучение в Оксфордском университете, где защитил докторскую диссертацию.

В 1990 году переехал в Японию, став преподавателем факультета права Университета Кейо.

Нил Маклин был назначен преподавателем поздней римской истории колледжа "Corpus Christi" (Оксфордский университет) 1 апреля 2007 года.

Научные интересы: религиозно-политические отношения в эпоху Поздней античности, богословские взгляды великих каппадокийцев, богословское учение блаженного Августина.
