St Serge to hold roundtable on new book, ‘La Collection canonique d'Antioche'
События

On 17 November at 7 pm an evening will be held at the St Sergius Institute, Paris, under the chairmanship of Professor Michel Stavrou, on the occasion of the publication of the book by Mr Aram Mardirossian: ‘La Collection canonique d'Antioche’, Paris, Centre de recherche d'histoire et civilisation de Byzance (Collège de France - CNRS), “Monographies” 34.  The first collection of ecclesiastical legislation, the Antiochian Canonical Collection arose in the fourth century at the time of the first Christological controversies. The supposed author, Euzoios of Antioch, was the figurehead of the “semi-Arian” church.

Composed in 370 in the context of the Arian dispute, this collection is doubly a work of combat. Politically, each of the five canonical groups which form the text is intended to fight against the doctrinal currents opposed to the official church. The legal content of the book is organised around two main themes: the control of ecclesiastical hierarchy and the fight against rigorist movements.

Admission is free.
