In his book “Another religion is possible”, which discusses religious pluralism, multiculturalism and feminism, Tamayo sums up his theological and sociological works from the perspective of the current situation in theology and interreligious dialogue. The book is largely devoted to the question of the significance and problems of Christianity in today’s multicultural world, which are discussed in terms of “liberation theology”.
Tamayo’s book reviews the fundamental tasks of religions, especially Christianity, in the context of intercultural and interreligious dialogue, trying to answer the problems of recent decades, among which the author points out, “social liberation” and “respect for the otherness of the sexes”, or feminism.
Tamayo calls for the creation of “a new theology, open to itself”, which can meet the challenges of the modern world and change it. The author believes that it is necessary to develop a new attitude towards the pressing problems of our time, including giving a Christian response to the issues of multiculturalism and gender. In order to achieve this Tamayo suggests using the experience of liberation theology.
Juan José Tamayo is head of the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the Carlos III University of Madrid. He is secretary general of the John XXIII Association of Theologians.
