Родился в 1936 г. в Берлине. Обучался в Свободном университете Берлина, где в1965 г. защитил докторскую диссертацию. В 1972 г. там же прошла хабилитация работы.
Стажировался в Университете Каира.
В 1995-2004 гг. руководил "Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales" в Париже.
В 1995-2005 гг. являлся профессором Института исламистики Свободного университета Берлига. Преподавал также в Принстонском университете в качестве приглашенного профессора.
С 2005 г. преподает в Богословской школе Гарвардского универститета.
