Профессор церковной истории в Даремском университете. Специализируется в области исследования истории протестантских конфессий в период их зарождения и раннего развития.

Получил бакалаврскую степень по истории в Кэмбриджском университете (колледж Trinity Hall), в том же университете получил магистерскую степень по протестантским исследованиям (колледж St. Andrews).

Докторская диссертация (PhD) по богословию была защищена в 2000 в Оксфордском университете (колледж St. Cross). Диссертация была издана как монография The Gospel and Henry VIII.

В 1999-2006 преподавал в Бирмингемском университете. С 2006 г. является профессором Даремского университета.
