Получил бакалаврскую и магистерскую степени в Оксфордском университете. Докторскую диссертацию защитил в University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Преподает в Дюкском университете с 2008 г. До этого преподавал в университетах Notre Dame (1986-1990), Чикаго (1984-1986, 1990-2000) и Иллиноиса (2000-2007).

Исследования базируются вокруг следующих тем: католическая богословско-философскаяя традиция во 2-ой пол. ХХ в., африканская христианская мысль 4 и 5 вв., гуптский период буддистской мысли.
