Защитил докторскую диссертацию в университете Чикаго, преподавал в университетах Нотр-Дам, Фордэм, Ивритском университете в Иерусалиме, Институте патристики Аугустинианум, Грегорианском университете и Университете Верджинии. Член Американской академии искусств и наук, бывший президент Американской академии религии и Североамериканского патристического общества. Председатель совета директоров Института религии и общественной жизни, который издает межконфессиональный журнал «First things».
