Conference on Emperor Constantine and Christianity to be held in Niš in 2012

In 2013 various events will be organized in Niš to celebrate an important date in the history of Christianity – the 1700th anniversary of the Edict of Milan. The emperor Constantine’s hometown will be the venue of a large international conference, “St. Emperor Constantine and Christianity.” The conference is planned to be held in late May or early June 2013, and the organizers are: the Centre for Church Studies, Niš; the “Ivan Dujčev” Institute for Slavo-Byzantine Studies, Sofia; the Department of History, Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade; the Institute for Orthodox Christian Studies, Cambridge; and the Institute for National and Religious Studies, Thessaloniki.

The Conference Committee consists of: Serbian Patriarch Irinej, president; Dragiša Bojović (Niš), vicepresident; Marcus Plested (Cambridge); Athanasios Angelopoulos (Thessaloniki); Vasja Velinova (Sofia); Siniša Mišić (Belgrade); Francesco Braschi (Milan); Ljubomir Maksimović (Belgrade); Aksinija Džurova (Sofia); Branislav Todić (Belgrade); Ivanka Gergova (Sofia); Thomas Papastergiou (Thessaloniki); Aleksander Naumov (Venice, Krakow); Radomir Popović (Belgrade); Vladimir Cvetković (Aarhus); Kiril Maksimovič (Moscow); Ivica Živković (Niš), secretary and Vladimir Aleksić (Niš), secretary.

Papers are invited on any aspect of the following themes:

• Emperor Constantine in history

• Theological, philosophical, historical, and other aspects of Christianity in the first millennium

• Theological, philosophical, and church-historical circumstances in the 4th century

• Emperor Constantine in art

• Emperor Constantine in literature

• Roman law and Christianity

• Edicts on religious tolerance

Since the proceedings volume is planned to be printed before the conference, the organisers ask that papers are sent by May 1, 2012 at the latest. Papers may be written in one of the following languages: English, Russian, French, Serbian or Bulgarian. The conference languages will be English and Serbian. Proceedings editorial board: Vladimir Cvetković, Siniša Mišić, Vasja Velinova, Athanasios Angelopoulos, Marcus Plested, Ivica Živković, and Dragiša Bojović, editor.

The conference fee is 30 EUR and will be due during 2012. Additional information about the payment procedure will be available at a later point.
